ISRN Ophthalmology , 2012, DOI: 10.5402/2012/763731
Abstract: Purpose. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of polybutylate-coated braided polyester (Ethibond* 5-0) suture for levator aponeurosis suturing to the anterior tarsal surface in involutional blepharoptosis repair surgery. Methods. Ten consecutive patients (16 eyes) with acquired blepharoptosis which resulted from levator aponeurosis dehiscence with good levator function had gone through surgery and were followed up for, at least, one year. Results. There was no significant change between postoperative MRD1 measurements. No serious complications, such as infection of the sutures, inflammation, granuloma formation or ptosis recurrence, were registered. Conclusion. Polybutylate-coated braided polyester (Ethibond* 5-0) suture is a safe and effective material for involutional blepharoptosis repair surgery. 1. Introduction Involutional blepharoptosis occurs in the elderly population as a result of levator aponeurosis dehiscence from the anterior tarsal surface, which stretches or thins the aponeurotic fibers, and results in a lowered upper eyelid position and obstruction of the superior visual field [1–3]. Clinically, the patient presents with a lower upper eyelid position, superior migration of the upper eyelid crease and normal levator muscle excursion. Recruitment of the frontalis muscle to raise the eyebrow and compensate for loss of the superior visual field sometimes occurs, and contralateral eyelid retraction may be apparent in cases of unilateral or asymmetric ptosis. Surgical repair is usually required to reattach the levator aponeurosis to the anterior face of the tarsal plate. One to three sutures are necessary. Suture materials that are used for this purpose include 6-0 silk, 6-0 or 5-0 polypropylene (Prolene*), 6-0 or 5-0 polyglactin, and 910 (Vicryl*). Each material has advantages as well as disadvantages for ptosis surgery. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of polybutylate-coated braided polyester (Ethibond* 5-0; 8.0?mm, 1/4?c, spatula, Ethicon*, Somerville, NJ, USA) for suturing the levator aponeurosis to the anterior tarsal surface in involutional blepharoptosis repair surgery. Ethibond is a very soft and easy to use multifilament suture. Ethibond knots are less bulky than knots of other suture materials [4]. The use of the nonabsorbable Ethibond reduces the risk of knots releasing as well as of ptosis recurrence. However, the nonabsorbable and multifilament structure of Ethibond has been reported to lead to infection, inflammation, or granuloma formation [5–8]. 2. Methods Ten consecutive patients with acquired
Presumed Virus-Induced Punctal Occlusion
Michael Yulish,Joseph Pikkel
Advances in Medicine , 2014, DOI: 10.1155/2014/809851
Abstract: Purpose. To investigate viral infection as a cause of punctal stenosis in individuals without any ocular or systemic risk factors. Methods. The study group comprised patients with no known cause for punctal occlusion who underwent surgery at one medical center during a one-year period. Excised tissue was subjected to histological examination, PCR, and nested PCR testing for common viruses (adenovirus, influenza A and B, enterovirus, varicella-zoster, CMV, herpes simplex types 1 and 2, Epstein-Barr virus, and parainfluenza type 1). Results. All nine patients identified were female, 20–38 years of age. The three-snip-procedure resolved tearing in eight of them. All excised samples showed chronic mononuclear inflammation compatible with viral infection or with viral infection immune inflammatory reaction. PCR testing was negative for all the viruses examined; however, nested PCR was positive in three patients. Conclusion. This study supports the proposition that punctal occlusion in young healthy females may be due to viral infection. 1. Introduction Punctal disorders are usually secondary to inflammation, infection, disuse, trauma, or medications. The punctum can be totally obliterated or stenotic. In herpes keratoconjunctivitis, the punctum and canaliculus may become stenotic [1]. In cases of longstanding ectropion or punctal ectropion alone, the punctal orifice may become stenotic or obliterated. The punctum may be occluded in systemic and ocular chronic graft-versus-host disease [2] and secondary to the usage of antineoplastic agents such as docetaxel (taxotere), as well as in patients with metastatic breast cancer [3] or chronic blepharitis [4]. Punctal or canaliculus occlusion may be associated with the use of certain topical ocular medications, including pilocarpine, phenylephrine hydrochloride, timolol maleate, indomethacin, and others, with a duration of exposure ranging from 3 weeks to 20 years [5]. In this study we examined the phenomenon of punctal occlusion or stenosis in young healthy patients without any ocular or systemic risk factors. We investigated the possibility that viral infections may be causal agents of chronic inflammation that results in punctual stenosis. 2. Patients and Methods Patients suffering from epiphora who were operated due to unilateral or bilateral punctal occlusion at our ophthalmology clinic during the period from May 2011 to June 2012 were included in this study. Exclusion criteria were as follows: below 18 years of age, chronic eye disease (cataract, glaucoma, uveitis, blepharitis, allergic conjunctivitis, and
An Empirical Examination of Herzberg’s Theory in the 21st Century Workplace. Organizational Psychology Re-Examined  [PDF]
Michael Mitsakis, Michael Galanakis
Psychology (PSYCH) , 2022, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2022.132015
Abstract: This present study empirically investigated the applicability of Herzberg’s theory in the various workplaces of the 21st century, including correctional officers, employees in the retail sector and front-line employees of telecommunication industries. In fact, through Systematic Review, it was examined whether Herzberg’s motivational and hygiene factors, such as working conditions, relationship with peers, supervisor feedback, etc., play a major role in boosting the satisfaction and motivation of the employees, and whether the lack of such factors leads to increased turnover. It was found out that the strongest predictors for employees’ perceived job satisfaction included the nature of the work along with recognition and achievement. Finally, certain limitations and suggestions for future research were provided.
Does Child Maltreatment Mediate Family Environment and Psychological Well-Being?  [PDF]
Michael Galea
Psychology (PSYCH) , 2010, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2010.12019
Abstract: This study tried to establish if childhood maltreatment mediates the established relationship between family environ-ment and psychological well-being, in a sample of Maltese university students (N = 312). However, our analysis sug-gested partial mediation only. Moreover, results indicated that abusive families are less loving, socially integrated, organized, and more conflicted. Family environment contributed positively, albeit limited, to cognitive well-being after controlling for child abuse history. In particular, cohesion, do add unique variance to subjective well-being, after controlling for child abuse. This study replicates classic research on the important role that family environment plays in children’s holistic development.
Blended Change Management: Concept and Empirical Investigation of Blending Patterns  [PDF]
Michael REISS
iBusiness (IB) , 2009, DOI: 10.4236/ib.2009.12008
Abstract: In coping with the challenges of revolutionary or evolutionary change processes, change managers do not rely on single tools but on toolboxes containing several domains of tools. The impact of toolboxes on change performance depends both on the complementary inter-domain mix and the intra-domain blending of tools. The patterns of blending are investigated both conceptually and empirically with respect to scope, diversity and coupling of tools. Survey results indicate that blending practices are predominantly determined by rational tool evaluation and by task context.
Single Wire Electrical System  [PDF]
Michael Bank
Engineering (ENG) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/eng.2012.411092
Abstract: The purpose of this article is to remind of the past and present problems of creating single wire electrical systems. This article presents a new one wire electrical transmission system named B-Line which uses one line only and does not use ground as a second line. The proposed method is to work on all frequencies and on all communication systems including DC systems. It also proposes to work on the concept of the single-pole signal source and single-pole signal load. It illustrates the possibility of cutting the cost of electrical lines and several other advantages in the fields of high frequency communication lines and antennas.

Natural Science (NS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ns.2013.59117
Abstract:

Through the process of trial and error, four unitless equations made up of nine constants have been found with exact answers. The related constants are the Speed of Light [1], the Planck constant [2], Wien’s displacement constant [3], Avogadro’s number [4], the universal Gravity constant [5], the Ampere constant [6], the Faraday constant [7], the Gas constant [8] and Apery’s constant [9].

The Counterfeit Electronics Problem  [PDF]
Michael Pecht
Open Journal of Social Sciences (JSS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jss.2013.17003
Abstract:

Counterfeit electronics have been reported in a wide range of products, including computers, telecommunications equipment, automobiles, avionics and military systems. Counterfeit electronic products include everything from very inexpensive capacitors and resistors to costly microprocessors to servers. This paper describes the counterfeit electronic products problem, and discusses the implication of counterfeit electronics on the electronic supply chain. We then present counterfeit detection and prevention techniques for electronics.

Irrationality Re-Examined: A Few Comments on the Conjunction Fallacy  [PDF]
Michael Aristidou
Open Journal of Philosophy (OJPP) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojpp.2013.32050
Abstract: In this paper, I argue that the probability model used to infer irrationality for the subjects in the famous Linda problem is not appropriate, and I suggest different approaches based on fuzzy reasoning models. My line of argument is two-fold: 1) If the term “probability” is understood properly (mathematically), then the experimenters used the wrong model. 2) If the term “probability” is understood casually (non- mathematically), then alternative models perhaps should be used to justify the subjects’ responses. The objective is to experiment with new ways of looking at irrationality and raise a discussion regarding the relation between irrationality, reasoning errors and logical models that are used as frameworks to study irrationality.
